What is 80/20?

The 80/20 rule:

Some of you may have heard of the 80/20 rule, otherwise known as the Pareto Principle which, states “that roughly 80% of effects come from 20% of causes. It is named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who observed that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. This principle has been applied to various fields, including economics, business, and personal productivity, to help identify the most important factors that contribute to desired outcomes. By focusing efforts on the most significant causes, one can achieve maximum results with minimal effort.”

This is true in studying too - roughly 20% of the content in your textbook, the “core concepts” as we like to think of them, will enable you to answer roughly 80% of questions.

By concentrating on the core concepts, 90% of students will quickly and easily jump to at least a B3 grade. This then gives them the confidence and motivation to push through into the following, more difficult phase of pushing towards the coveted A1 grade.
